Festive treat for young adult carers

On the 22nd December, twenty-two Young Adult Carers (YACs) from across the county came together for our Film and Food Christmas Activity, where they enjoyed a private screening of the newly released Blockbuster Avatar 2 at Gloucester Cineworld.

We know just how important it is for YACs to have the space and time to step away from their caring role, particularly at this time of year when so many others without responsibilities are enjoying the festive lead up. The private screening meant we were able to provide something very exclusive for them, which few get to experience. It provided a safe space where they were able to meet others who have a real understanding of the impact being a young adult carer, where they were able to engross themselves into the film and also enjoy each other’s company, have fun, laughs, and build friendships. We even had a couple of YACs new to our service who attended, which is a huge step when you don’t know anyone.   We were so pleased to read the feedback they gave us - ‘Amazing to communicate with people’, ‘enjoyed meeting new people who understand what you’re going through’, ‘I feel more comfortable to come to Cineworld- it was my first time coming to Cineworld and I would 100% want to come again even independently, ‘there's more YACs out there that I didn't know about’.

Following the film and with great thanks to The Ed Shed (Gloucester Folk Museum) for providing us with a cosy Christmas venue at a greatly discounted rate, and Waitrose for very kindly providing us with delicious festive party buffet food, the YACs were able to continue socialising and building friendships through the afternoon.  They enjoyed eating together and being part of the Xmas Team Quiz and everyone received a gift, thanks to the generosity of many providing gifts to our organisation. Further feedback from our YACs ‘it was so funny, and food was lovely,’ ‘I had such a good time’ , ’Fun quiz and lovely food’, ‘Very fun’.

We were so pleased to provide a festive event for our YACS that they enjoyed and gained something from – thanks to all those who have helped us to make it possible, including our fabulous volunteers Paul and Judy.
