For the past two years GYC has been working with London School of Economics (LSE) alongside Sheffield Young Carers and Durham Family Action on a research project about supporting young carers.
The research explores what kind of services and support the young carers felt had benefitted them. It also looked at what barriers there are in accessing support and what young carers felt would be a ‘dream service’ if they could design one. It also addressed the barriers that might prevent young carers and their families from seeking support
Young Carer Advisors from the three areas have been involved in shaping the research through a series of online and face to face meetings since Spring 2021. This final meeting in January in London involved getting the young carers to help shape the format of the results of the research which will be out soon, including designing an animation.
It was a great opportunity for the young carers to visit London and to spend time in the impressive LSE campus buildings. They have had an insight into how academic research happens and can see how their involvement can make a difference to young carers support and policy as the results are shared.
As we has some time after the LSE meeting the advisors chose to go and visit Camden Town before our train. We had great fun checking out the atmosphere of the market before we got some dinner and headed home on the train to Gloucestershire.
Yusraa, one of the advisors shared her thoughts of the day “I really enjoyed spending the day looking at what our research accomplished and having a lovely day out in London – a lot of excitement, great food and great company. I would say to any young carer – if you feel able to – say ‘Yes’ to GYC trips”.
The results of the LSE research are going to be shared at an upcoming briefing event on 30th March – if you are interested in attending please contact hana@glosyoungcarers.org.uk.
