New volunteer for Gloucester Senior Young Carers Group - Debi Edwards

  • Why did you decide to volunteer for GYC?

I love working with young people & as a mum of 4 & 4 grandchildren I felt I have the skills to be able to do this.

My youngest is now at an age where I have a bit more free time & wanted to give a bit of my time to the amazing young carers that give a lot of their’s

  • It would be great if you could share how you felt going along to group for the first time.

I felt a little apprehensive the first time as I wasn’t sure how the group ran, what was my role in it & would they like me!

But everyone welcomed me & was very friendly.

  • What kind of things do you get involved with?

I have been involved mainly in the cooking activities as this is a skill I have developed over the years raising  4 children, I enjoy cooking and it’s a great opportunity to get the young people involved & to chat whilst enjoying themselves

I have had a large group with me &. also 1 to 1, which has been lovely

I have also done crafty things & talked as a group around the table through bingo games & such like

  • How does volunteering make you feel?

It is a honour to be part of such an amazing Charity as a volunteer

It’s a heart-warming feeling & very humbling when the children are having fun & interacting with me.

  • What would you say to anyone else thinking about volunteering with GYC?

I would say Do it!

Volunteering is a great way to get involved & to make a little difference.
