On Saturday 20th January the Social Prescribing team at Gloucestershire Young Carers held a Child and Parent event at The Ed Shed in The Folk of Gloucester. This event was about bringing children and parents together to spend some quiet, quality family time, due to the fact caring roles sometimes impact on this in daily life.
We focused the activities on building opportunities to promote mental well-being with craft-based elements, all that linked to the great outdoors!
We were supported by The Ernest Cook Trust who assisted with making willow bird feeders and seed balls, these creations could then be used by the families the following weekend as part of the RSPB Big Garden Watch, with a RSPB spotter sheet provided to monitor the different types of birds visiting their gardens.
We were also lucky enough to be supported by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust who helped with the making of terrariums.
Alongside this we had beanbags and games, chill out areas and of course….pizza!
It was fantastic to see families spending this time together, with big smiles on their faces! A brilliant time was had by all, with some lovely goodies and outdoor wellness packs being taken home at the end of the day.
“It was amazing! It was so great to spend some quality time with my daughter and also meet other parents who understand what it’s like. Both me and my daughter made some new friends who we hope to see again soon.”
“I just want to say a massive thank you to Young Carers and the massive difference you’ve made to me and [my daughter]”
