We invited 20 young carers who care for a sibling for a day of sharing, learning, being together, practical and fun activities.
The sibling day was organised specifically for young carers who care for a sibling as this impacts young carers differently and they can often be overlooked both practically and emotionally.
The day, held at Murray Hall in Tuffley, consisted of 2 practical workshops around coping strategies and a session looking at the impact Covid had on them as young carers addressing what it was like before lockdown, during lockdown and what they want it to look like going forward.
There was also a yummy cooking session where young carers made easy fun healthy meals like homemade pizzas and fruit kebabs which they could then go home and make themselves. This activity was held as parents of sibling young carers often have their time consumed with meeting the needs of the sibling and meals can be rushed or missed.
The rest of the day was for fun with lots of running and was finished off with a feedback snowball fight and chocolate mindfulness exercise. Feedback gained from young carers was that they would love more sibling activity days. Thank you to Alexander Burn Funeral Directors for providing craft equipment and Waitrose Cheltenham for donation of cooking ingredients.
