Punches, Kicks, and New Friendships: A Day at Cheltenham’s Strike and Grappling Academy

For our October half term activity young carers had a session with the Strike and Grappling Academy in Cheltenham.

They started off with a kickboxing-based lesson and learnt a variety of punches, kicks and block combos. Young carers had a go working in pairs and striking a pad. They were also taught a variety kicks such as front kicks, butterfly kick and roundhouse kicks. A favourite was the technique known as shrimping, doing a shrimping motion to give you more space to escape.

When the young carers were asked what they liked about the day many of them said they enjoyed making new friends! The instructor Rob also showed them demos of judo sweeps and throws which was exciting!

Keyworker Khadija Hansdot who organised the activity describes how

"Many young carers find it hard to get out and do fun things in the holidays due to the health needs within their families. It was great to see the young carers enjoying this opportunity -most of them had never done any self-defence or martial arts before and had a great time getting stuck in.  Thankfully nobody got hurt, in fact we had more injuries at our Sports Day!’"

The Academy are also offering an ongoing discount for any young carers who want to learn more.
