18-year-oldHarry Doxsey is preparing to have his head shaved to raise funds for anorganisation close to his heart: Gloucestershire Young Carers.
Hehas chosen to rise to the head-shave challenge after receiving support from thecharity for many years.
He was referred to Gloucestershire Young Carers when he was just 10 due to the fact his brother has multiple disabilities including cerebral palsy and epilepsy, speech and language difficulties, severe anxiety, social communication issues and learning difficulties. He initially attended one of the charity’s respite support groups. As he grew older he then received one to one support from the Young Adult Carer support worker who has helped with support into employment and included him in residentials and away days.
Harrywas recommended to join the charity’s young carers’ Forum, a group of youngpeople who act as the ‘voice’ of their peers. He has, during his time with theForum, been involved in developing strategies for partner agencies, has metwith key members of society and even presented a bouquet to the Duchess ofGloucester during her visit to the charity.
Despitefacing his own challenges, Harry was recently taken on as an intern at TheJury’s Inn, Cheltenham working in the Juvenate Leisure Club which is managed by3D Leisure.
ManagerRob Orme says: “This is the first time we have had an intern. We have a closeteam here and Harry has fitted in very well. He supports the staff and isbrilliant with the clients.
“Weare delighted to support him in his fundraising event. Jury’s Inn have beenraising funds for Gloucestershire Young Carers for the past year.
Harry’smum Kerry says: “Going out and speaking to people on behalf of GloucestershireYoung Carers helped build Harry’s confidence and he really enjoys his timethere.”
